How to Make Witch Hats with Fondant
These witch hats are very cute and eye-catching. The process has many steps, but trust me, the result will be worth it! They can be used for a Halloween party, for a Harry Potter-style magic party, for a fantasy party … They would look fantastic in a Candy Bar, for example.
I made the recipe using fondant, but if you don’t like it, you can also make it with modeling chocolate in different colors. I personally like the flavor of modeling chocolate better than fondant, but it’s your choice!
What you will need:
- Yellow fondant
- Black fondant
- White fondant
- Purple fondant
- A piping bag tip or small circular cutter
- Small paintbrush
- A little bit of water.
Process:
The first thing we will do is make the base of the hat. To do that, we take a small circular cutter (I used the back of a piping bag tip) and press until we get the desired shape.
Then we take a piece of black fondant, make a small ball and shape it into a cone. The easiest way to do this is on a flat surface using your fingers to shape it. We are going to leave the tip slightly stretched so that it is long, curved and a little bit droopy. With our fingers we will also try to leave the base as flat as possible so that we can easily glue it to the base later.
We will use water as an adhesive to glue our fondant. We must be careful to use a small amount, as it leaves shiny stains, so we will use just enough to glue our pieces together. We need to glue the cone to the base. To do this, put a small drop of water in the center of the base and spread it in a tiny circle using a paintbrush. Make sure to only put water where the cone will cover it later. Place the cone on top and press gently to stick it together. Allow it to dry.
Take a piece of purple fondant, knead it using a rolling pin to make it flat and very thin, and cut it into a long rectangle. It’s better to make it long and then cut it than end up with a short piece. We surround the base of the cone with the purple band and glue it with water. Again, be careful not to use too much water that will leave a stain.
As a final touch we cut out a yellow and a black square (the black one a bit smaller than the other), and glue them concentrically onto the purple band, to make the hat buckle. If you want, you can buy sugar stars or cut out some small stars from fondant and stick them on the top of the hat, it looks really cute!
